Monday 30th May 2011

It was a stunning day for Powell's Picks on Saturday with both Activate and Ferdoos winning at starting prices of 2/1 and 3/1 respectively. Desert Law came 2nd by a neck at 4/1 and ran on very well. Today's selections are from across meetings at Leicester, Redcar and Carlisle and will hopefully make a handy e/w treble.

Carlisle 2:55
HANSOMIS
11/2 at Bet365, StanJames and William Hill
This Irish 7 year old has the ability to do well this afternoon against a relatively strong field. Hansomis likes Carlisle and has shown quality over 6f. With two good runs here previously, Hansomis was 2nd here last week being beaten by Pelmanism, however I expect that to be reversed today. Pelmanism will be well backed this afternoon but the drying ground will not suit and there are other horses with favourable handicaps. Hansomis is a good bet each way here and has every chance of winning it.

Leicester 5.00
UPPERCUT
8/1 at various bookies
Uppercut is improving and respected, and has a stunning e/w chance at Leicester. Sir Micheal Stoute's horse Chilled is dangerous and is likely to go off favourite but Uppercut should run it close at the post. The 3 year old beat Stage Attraction when 4th at Warwick over 7f and then followed that up with a good run over the same course and distance in May, finishing second. The ground will suit Uppercut who is in good form and has the ability to do well here.

Redcar 5.20
SIMPLE JIM
13/8 at various bookies
If there is one horse you are backing today it has to be Simple Jim. If you are backing it then back big because I can't see the 7 year old being beaten here. He won this race last year off a mark 2lbs higher than he is today and has three wins over this course and distance on fast ground. David O'Meara's yard is on cracking form and jockey Silvestre De Sousa has a 38% strike rate on Simple Jim. Everything points to a win at Redcar this afternoon. The trip, course and ground all suit, he has a good handicap and both yard and jockey are on form. I can't see anything other than a win for Simple Jim.

Saturday 28th May 2011

It was certainly a day for the bookies at Newmarket yesterday with none of the favourites winning any of the 7 races. My tip Watch Amigo was disappointing in the 4:05, won by 20/1 shot Folly Bridge. However Powell's Picks didn't come out badly at all. Swiss Dream winning the 2:55 at a starting price of 9/1 gave my opening tips a big priced winner. With another exciting day of racing in store I've chosen three horses from across the Haydock and Newmarket cards, all with a chance of performing well.

Haydock 2:05
ACTIVATE
9/2 at Bet365
Activate has won here and at Yarmouth over 1m6f and this step up to 2m should suit him perfectly. The 4 year old finished last season on a high with back to back wins and is expected to enjoy this staying trip. Despite being 6lbs heavier than he was at Yarmouth he is unexposed at 2m or further and clearly likes the track having shown a strong display previously. Zuider Zee was impressive on his seasonal return three weeks ago but I am backing Activate to beat him today.

Haydock 3:05
FERDOOS
3/1 at various bookies
This impressive horse is making her handicap debut today on her first start of the season. Ferdoos won her first two starts and then ran well despite losing out by a nose to Pollys Mark last time out at Ascot. Pollys Mark is a non runner today and the 1m4f  trip and good to firm ground will suit Ferdoos. Punters will be tempted by Henry Cecil's unbeaten Vita Nova and Crystal Capella, despite his 7lb penalty, but for me Ferdoos is open to improvement and should run well this afternoon.

Newmarket 3:25
DESERT LAW
9/2 at William Hill and Bet365
The three year old Desert Law won a fair course and distance maiden in October, and like Ferdoos, is making his handicap debut today. Showed plenty of potential on his first two starts last season and this Irish colt is well respected today. Henry Candy's L'ami Louis is expected to go off as favourite and won last time out at Salisbury. But Desert Law comes from a very speedy family and has plenty of improvement to come.

Friday 27th May 2011

Today I've studied the horses running at Newmarket; there's some very interesting races and a good competitive field. I've picked out three horses at decent prices who should have a chance of performing at todays meeting.

Newmarket 2:55
SWISS DREAM

8/1 at various bookies
This three year old has a good chance in this fillies' handicap having won her maiden here 12 months ago. She has put in some solid efforts since then and has had two good runs recently. She does prefer the shorter trip and this step up to 6f will provide a strong challenge. Having Kieren Fallon on board is a positive move and he will know how to win from a difficult outside draw. Punters will probably favour Instance and Blanche Dubawi, and Swiss Dream will need to prove herself at the trip, but she enjoyed York last time out and has a solid e/w shout this afternoon.

Newmarket 4:05
WATCH AMIGO
7/1 at various bookies, 8/1 at StanJames
This Irish horse has won at Newmarket before and has performed brilliantly at 7f, winning by a long way at Doncaster last month at this trip. The 5 year old is lightly raced but has improved steadily and consistently, winning twice last season. Punters will be aware of the disappointing run a few weeks ago at Kempton but you can blame a wide draw and the 1m trip for that display. Todays race is back at the preferred 7f and the handicappers have dropped Watch Amigo a 1lb to 85. Kieren Fallon rides again on a horse who has a 50% strike rate at this distance, winning 3 of 6 races, and has another good chance today.

Newmarket 4:40
BLUE DESTINATION
11/2 at SkyBet
My final pick of todays meeting is Blue Destination who has a favourable handicap and ran a personal best time at Yarmouth earlier this month. This is a very very difficult race to call and includes 6 horses coming in off the back of victories. Blue Destination is a horse that is constantly improving and seems to have plenty to give here today. This will easily be one of the tightest races of the day and I think Blue Destination will run the favourite Danadana very close at the post.
