Ascot Week

Sorry there was no update today. Been mad busy in work and so was unable to blog. I will put some tips up for tomorrows racing but it will be quite a short post I think. Hope everyone had a bit of luck today!

Wednesday 8th June 2011

Yesterdays racing at Redcar was good for Powell's Picks with 2 winners out of my 3 selections. Boom and Bust secured a hatrick of wins with an impressive ride in the 3:35 and in the 4:10 Pintsize destroyed the field and won by 8 lengths to give Powell's Picks a lovely double. Today I've looked at three horses from across three different different meetings all with slightly longer prices to try and make a handy each way trixie.

Beverley 2:30
RYEDANE
11/2 at William Hill
Ryedane won this race last year when a 4/1 favourite, making it a hatrick of wins at the time. Despite not being in the same kind of form he was then, he still has to be considered a threat today. He came a disappointing 7th here at the end of May but wasn't able to run his own race over 5f. Before that last outing he was showing a return to the kind of form we saw 12 months ago. Today Ryedane is well handicapped and the course and distance suits. A switch of tactics and positive riding from Lance Betts should see him bounce back against a field which isn't the strongest.

Haydock 4:20
ONE SCOOP OR TWO
6/1 at Boylesports
A very reliable horse who had two wins over this course and distance last summer. He came a good second at Chester last time out but that was over 1m 2 1/2f and this drop back to 1m should be ideal. Dazeen is in incredible form and along with Dolphin Rock will provide the main threats to One Scoop Or Two. Rey Hollinshead's 5 year old will enjoy the ground and the trip though and is another horse with a great chance of placing today.

Kempton 9:15
SPA'S DANCER
7/1 at various bookies
The very last race of the Kempton meeting tonight and it could be quite a nervous wait if the other two picks come in! Spa's Dancer is a lovely 4 year old with a good claim tonight. The Irish horse enjoys the 7f trip but punters will be confident knowing he ran well to come 4th in a 1m handicap last time out. The drop back in trip will suit him perfectly. There are doubts over him however as he only has 1 win in 15 attempts over this course and distance. Cheekpieces will be used for the first time tonight in an attempt to change that stat and Spa's Dancer definitely has an each way claim.

Tuesday 7th June 2011

After a thrilling couple of days at Epsom, heads are already turning to Ascot next week, where a fantastic few days of races culminates in the Golden Jubilee Stakes on Saturday.

At Epsom last weekend the bookies were all smiles as Carlton House could only manage third in the derby and other well backed horses such as Boogie Shoes, Bourne and Premio Loco failed to deliver for punters.

Today's picks come from Redcar and will hopefully replicate the kind of result Powell's Picks had last Friday.

Redcar 3:00
RYEDALE DANCER
3/1 at various bookies
My original choice in this race was Trading however she is now a non runner and I am backing her stablemate Ryedale Dancer instead. The Tim Easterby yard is in stunning form and Ryedale Dancer has a very good handicap for this race. She came a good runner up at Carlisle last time out on her handicap debut and is respected here. The ground is slightly quicker today and Maggie Mey and Fleurie Lover are dangerous but Ryedale Dancer has a shot. Her running style suits this straight course and she will be there or there abouts at the post.

Redcar 3:35
BOOM AND BUST
5/1 at StanJames
Coming off two wins at Bath and Newbury this four year old is in cracking form. Both of those wins came over this 1m trip and the fast ground suited him well. The Irish horse has travelled by far the furthest of any horses at Redcar today and will have a big claim in this one. The main threat will be Kiwi Bay who won this race 12 months ago and is well respected. Boom and Bust is a good front runner and those tactics could see Marcus Tregoning securing a very impressive hatrick of wins. Despite a 6lb rise since his last victory, Redcar is a course that should suit him here and the trip is perfect.

Redcar 4:10
PINTSIZE
11/10 at various bookies
Pintsize has been a runner up on his last two starts, over 6f at Thirsk and then 7f at Mussleburgh on Friday. Adrian Nicholls is on board and should be well in the mix once again. Latte with Kieren Fallon riding will be the biggest threat and is down in grade today but Pintsize is definitely the pick of the weights. With two solid runs behind him I'd expect Pintsize to go one better and pick up a victory here by some distance.

The Epsom Derby Day has arrived!

A thrilling afternoon of drama yesterday included Dancing Rain winning the Oaks and Dettori being punished with a 10 day suspension for dropping his hands. Fingers crossed Derby Day will provide similar excitement! My picks did quite well yesterday with Midday putting in a great run to come second to St Nicholas Abbey and Dance And Dance producing a stunning display to win the Investec Mile. If Blue Bunting hadn't forfeited third place than Powell's Picks Placepot would have come in as well.

Today Powell's Picks is coming from Epsom Downs so selections will be coming through on Twitter rather than this blog. Follow @jgpowell13 or @theplumline for our tips and the latest Derby news from Epsom. Looking forward to a thrilling day of racing.

Friday 3rd June 2011

Today is Epsom Oaks Day, the third of five British Classics. I've gone for three horses I feel will run well at Epsom tody and I've also selected a placepot of 24 lines. Fingers crossed for a good day before the Derby tomorrow!

Epsom 2:10
DANCE AND DANCE
7/1 at various bookies
This is a very competitive handicap but I fancy Dance and Dance each way here. He came a close second at York last month and could easily go better this afternoon. Ryan Moore is on board the Irish horse today and will be hoping to control him from the off. The start could be very important and there will be a lot of horses respected here including Tartan Gigha, Start Right and Extraterrestrial. Dance and Dance has shown he has the quality and can stay on at this trip and seems excellent value to place if he starts well.

Epsom 2:45
MIDDAY
6/4 at various bookies
Midday has 5 Group 1 victories to her name and will be eyeing up a sixth today. This is the first time she will be taking on colts since coming second on this course in the 2009 Blue Riband Trial. Since then she has won 7 of her last 12 starts including the Middleton Stakes at York last time out. Midday is a solid middle distance filly who will not fear the course and rarely runs a bad race. Out of the 5 that run St Nicholas Abbey is likely to go out favourite. A promising horse that has not always lived up to potential and can often have bad days. If he is on form today St Nicholas Abbey will provide Midday with some tough opposition, but the ground and trip suit Midday and she should have a chance at the post.

Epsom 4:05
BLUE BUNTING
11/4 at StanJames
The Oaks is the third of the five British classics and I'm backing Blue Bunting, the winner of the 1000 Guineas. The last horse to do the 1000 Guineas-Oaks double was Kazzia in 2002 who was also from the Godolphin team Blue Bunting is in today. The quartet will be confident of another double today. The Guineas victory came as a suprise to some considering the ground and trip but todays conditions will suit Blue Bunting very nicely. Considered a strong candidate for this race, it is promising for punters that in the past 30 years over half of the fillies attempting the double succeeded. Dettori rode well on her when securing the first Classic earlier this year and will relish todays distance, and the opportunity to secure another.

Epsom Placepot
Leg 1: Antara + Timepiece
Leg 2: Dance and Dance + Wannabe King + Tartan Gigha
Leg 3: Midday
Leg 4: Prompter + Dhaamer
Leg 5: Blue Bunting + Havant
Leg 6: Hooray
24 lines at £1 a line
